Doomsday Shelters

On July 28, 2010, in Planning, Preparedness, Shelter, Survival, by Security Guy

It may be the economy, the perceive increase in natural disasters or just the overall mood of the country, but there seems to be a resurgence of interest in underground shelters.  USA Today has a story about one individual in California who is selling space in his “13,000-square-foot refurbished underground shelter formerly operated by the U.S. government at an undisclosed location near Barstow, Calif., that will have room for 134 people.”  Click on the link to get the full story.

I’m betting that this current mess gets a lot worse and within a few years we will be involved in a serious war. I have been anticipating this for many years so when I built my house, I built a fallout shelter under the garage. How clever…I tell everyone that it is a “root cellar” and keep some canned goods etc. in there…Remember, the future belongs to the prepared..

    TJ,

I bet the “root cellar” comes in handy one day!

    — If i had the money I would build my own “Root cellar” somewhere or if I won the lottery and really had the money I would buy a retired missile silo and have it rehabilitated. I would make it into an ongoing concern, There is a calling for extremely secure storage these days as everyone from corporations storing files to the wealthy desiring extra secure storage for rare wines or even a piano.
    — I would make it a home operated business and live there too while I slowly started long term storage of food and items needed both by me and others if things did fail. Nothing like sewing needles, fish hooks and such for trading.
    — Alas, I was permanently injured on the job and medical retirements don’t pay too much :-( . However I and a good friend from work keep a weather eye out for a cooperative or group in our area that needs what we have to offer or the right terms for a business loan that would work. Till then it is in my better interest to try and make sure the system survives and things keep on trucking in a good way.
    — If anyone has the money and really wants a used silo they sell them. Here are a couple sites where they sell retired silos:

And Radius Engineering Int. ( http://www.bomb-shelter.net ) makes an excellent modular bunker system that can go from just a single module for a family or add on into a huge complex for hundreds. Of course in the end it’s all about money when you are talking bunkers. I know I won’t have one unless the good Lord decides to let me take home the lottery like the people next door in Minnesota who just walked away with $224 Million ( about $180 million lump sum cash ). What one could do with that, huh?

Here is a walk through video of the Barstow bunker listed above.

    — One old silo has been converted to a luxury home for sale for about 5 million. If you have the money for one of those you can officially list me as ENVIOUS!
    — Though bunkers and shelters would be great to have I think we all have to admit that we are not in that 5% of the US population that controls 25% of the countries wealth.
