I’m reminded every now and again of how we can become so engrossed in a subject that we tend to lose sight of the overall picture. The old saying “You can’t see the forest for the trees” is probably the best example of this. I have to admit this does happen to me every now and then. To correct this I try and detach from the subject and then reevaluate the problem to gain some clarity.
While doing some research on another article I came across a graphic from the National Safety Council, which displays your “lifetime odds of dying for selected causes.” What is interesting about the information is the top three causes are all health related. Heart disease is the number one cause with a 1 in 6 chance of dying, followed by cancer and then stroke. I guess what I came away with was that I may not be able to stop any of the health issues per say, but I can surely influence them in my favor. So while you are out storing food, acquiring gear and making plans, don’t forget the greatest tool you have in any survival situation…“you”, make sure and take care of yourself.
Check out the graphic and let me know what your take is?
Thanks

Hey SG!
If you take care of yourself well, you still will die of heart attack, stroke, cancer, alzheimers. You gotta die from something. From a survivalist’s viewpoint we should pay attention to what things are most likely to kill us premature.
Our greatest asset now and post SHTF is our health, and it should be our top priority in everyday life annd in our prepping.
True, watching our health should be up on the priority list. Get the medical and dental check ups done and it wouldn’t hurt to buy extra medicines and vitamins while they are in abundant supply.
CDC has the breakdown. The statistics are misleading when they aren’t displayed by age. Accidents is the leading cause of death for young children, juveniles, and young adults. AIDS and suicide are prominent for young adults. Cancer, followed by accidents, is the leader into old age.
Heart disease is the #1 killer because it is the official cause of death for old people. “Heart failure” is indisputable and is a catch-all that may conceal the true cause – cardiovascular disease, cancer, infection, error with medicines, etc.
One way that I have improved my health is by learning about herbs. Since I started down the that path I have not had a cold or allergy. Mainstream medicine is more of a cause of our problems rather than a cure. Around 150,000 Americans die a year from complications arising from taking the FDA’s approved drugs. The FDA is the true reason for premature death in America.
